Police are urging people
of all ages to go beyond the labels given to teenagers.
Officers in Scartho, Waltham and Wold Villages are working on
tackling anti social behaviour in the areas.
They are speaking to young people about their behaviour when necessary
and confiscating any alcohol.
As well as talking about anti social behaviour they are chatting
to young people about the things that they sometimes do that can
upset people, even though their actions to not amount to any form
of criminality, for example hanging around in large groups.
Where necessary officers are sending a letter to parents to highlight
the issues in the area and the reasons why their child has been
stopped.
The letter includes the following text, “The impact of anti-social
behaviour creates an increased fear and perception of crime amongst
members of our community. This in turn leaves them feeling intimidated
and vulnerable. These residents are currently receiving visits
by the police to provide reassurance.
We are presently working alongside other agencies to tackle youth
provision in our area and we urge that you support this work as
it progresses in the coming months so that we can secure permanent
provisions. If you would like to know about current youth provision
in your area, then please contact us. We are also actively seeking
volunteers to help with solving this problem, so if you are interested
then please contact any of the officers on the above number so
that this can be discussed in more detail.
Where offences are being committed we will also be taking positive
police action and these youths will be dealt with accordingly.”
As part of their work officers ran Operation ASB, between 13 February
and 01 March, which was aimed at 12 to 17-year-olds.
The aims of the operation included:
Engaging with the youngsters and finding out why they are congregating
in certain areas, what they would like to do and where they would
like to go.
Providing appropriate advice, particularly with reference to explaining
the effects these young people are having on residents as a result
of their presence.
Areas targeted by officers during Operation ASB included: Waltham
Road and the shops area, St Giles Avenue and the surrounding area
including the Rose and Crown field, Edge Avenue, Mendip Avenue
and surrounding areas, and Coniston Avenue and surrounding areas
including Briar Lane/Lilac Court.
The sorts of behaviour being targeted ranged from kicking balls
against shops and littering to underage drinking, anti social
behaviour and criminal damage.
Insp Tracy Bradley, who is responsible for policing in the area,
said, “The majority of young people in the area do not commit
anti social behaviour but some people may be concerned about behaviour
such as hanging around in large groups.
This concern could be due to their tolerance levels rather than
the young people’s behaviour.
Often they are just chatting to their friends and are only hanging
around because they have nowhere else to be.
We want young people to think about how their actions may affect
others and older people to think back to when they were younger.
We are also looking at working with our partners and the community
to improve provisions for young people in the area.
The aim is to encourage mutual respect amongst all age groups.
In cases where young people are thought to be committing anti
social behaviour or criminal damage or drinking we would urge
residents to contact us. We will not tolerate such behaviour.”

Problems
being Sorted Out
Humberside
Police is working with North East Lincolnshire Council and housing
association Shoreline to improve the lives of residents on the
Bradley Park Estate, Grimsby.
Now Bradley Park Estate residents have thanked the Safer Communities
Partnership after action was taken on issues raised at public
meetings.
Residents of Columbus Way complained about a gang of youths who
were damaging fencing and cars during games of football.
The residents were getting increasingly distressed about the situation.
The Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), and Shoreline housing
officer Steve Parker did joint visits to the young people's homes
and asked the young people's parents to get them to stop playing
football in that area.
Tony Burman, and other neighbourhood wardens, have provided the
youths with alternatives including the Bradley playing fields,
and 2nd Avenue Resource Centre.
Humberside Police's ASBO unit sent warning letters to the parents
of the youths involved.
Continual patrols by the PCSOs, Mr Parker, and the community wardens
have ensured that the youths are now playing their football away
from the original area.
At a follow up meeting one of the original complainants brought
in a “Thank you” card, with a supporting letter.
One of the residents said: “I never thought that when we came
into complain two weeks ago that you would sort this problem out
for us.”
Humberside Police spokesman Danielle Waite said: “This shows how
agencies can make a huge difference to people's lives simply by
working together.”

National Victim Support
Helpline
0845 3030900.
Anyone
can become a victim of crime.
People react to crime in many ways. Although most victims don’t
suffer long term harm, both adults and children can be seriously
affected.
People who have suffered a crime may need practical information
and advice, or simply someone to talk to.
“Since
the burglary, no matter how many times I’ve cleaned the
flat, it doesn’t feel the same.”
“I
keep thinking I see the person who attacked me walking down the
street towards me.”
“I
am so worried about going to court and having to face him again.”
“We
didn’t know whether we could claim any kind of insurance
or compensation.”
Why
Victim Support?
Victim Support is the national charity which helps victims of
crime. Trained volunteers provide free, confidential support and
information following crimes ranging from burglary and assault
to rape and murder.
People
often need:
Someone
to talk to.
Information on police and court procedures.
Reassurance
and emotional support.
Information
and support when attending court.
Help with compensation and insurance.
Crime
prevention information.
Help
with housing or benefit problems.
The Service is in contact with many other organizations that can
help victims of crime and we can access all sorts of information
as in the list above.
Volunteers
are always needed and we look for people who are understanding
and good listeners and can get on with people of all ages, cultures
and backgrounds. Anyone can apply. No previous experience of this
kind of work is necessary. All volunteers are given training before
they start and further training is available during the period
of service in specialized areas such as sexual offences, to help
victims of serious crime.
Some
volunteers work several hours a week, or on an occasional basis,
during the day or in the evenings and at weekends. Most people
volunteer for Victim Support because they want to help re-dress
the balance and they are rewarded by seeing the difference Victim
Support can make to people whose lives have been shattered by
crime.
